Interview Proj. Explanation Piece
Why Do You Care? (a summary of our goal)
Patricia Joanne Yeager, maiden name Emmett, was born in 1946 on the 2nd of September. She is a current resident of the Animas Valley who has spent a substantial portion of her life near Cascade Creek. Her mother’s family had initially established themselves in the valley in the 1800’s, and her father had built a cabin up in Cascade Creek in 1912. Although individual person, the historical documentation that can be derived from the events that have occurred throughout her life is extraordinary, unique and quite frankly a rarity. For this project, out group had ventured out to her residence in order to conduct an interview and later submit it to The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College. This work we’ve collaborated on is a bigger entity than us, in the sense that it’s establishing recorded history and presenting information and context behind an under spoken social class that has made up the history of the area we live in. The knowledge we have on this topic as a community in whole (that’s currently expanding day by day) is lackluster, so we believe that more clearly outlining the roots of where this growing town had initially bloomed from is a vitality to what surrounds us every day.

Through the entirety of this unit, I was introduced to multiple mathematical concepts. These concepts include different types of graphs like square root, quadratic, absolute value, etc. after only working with linear equations last year. I also more clearly learned how to take collected data, and formulate a graph with a correlating equation that best fits with the collected data. If I were to personally define what mathematics is, I would define it as a collection of concepts based around numerical and algebraic relationships. As for how mathematics is learned, it really depends on the person you’re teaching it to. Obviously, as with learning anything, the understanding you retain from what you’re taught depends on the amount of time and effort you apply just as much as how well said subject is taught. `
Personal Development
My personal growth has been far from satisfactory in an academic sense, as well as a personal sense. I wouldn’t ask anybody for help, because I’m too stubborn to do so. That could be the fact that I have social issues and I avoid interaction in class when it’s possible, which can be problematic. Later into the unit I felt a bit more motivated, but I had issues with the first few assignments while I was attempting to do them, (specifically tables) and when it got to the point where I felt flustered I gave up on it. Also, the fact that I didn’t have a finished product prevented me from turning in my work or presenting. I have a habit of not mentioning these things and expecting things to work out in some way but that hasn’t been the case and it’s something I need to change. This unit has not been great for me (understatement of the century) but it’s provided some insight on the things I need to change.
Unit Extension Question
EQ: How can I find a way to fit concepts that involve patterns into the things I do every day?
